The winter months are commonly associated with illness, especially the cold and flu. Fortunately, it doesn’t always have to be this way. With the right tips, you can protect yourself against viruses, so you can stay healthy and active even during the chilliest time of the year. That said, here are a few tips you can use to stay healthy this season.

1. Make Sure You’re Fully Vaccinated

It’s important to stay up to date with your regular vaccines, especially when it comes to harmful infections such as Influenza and Covid-19. The CDC suggests that everyone aged six months and older should get a seasonal flu shot to reduce the risk of infection. If you can’t receive the vaccine at the time, Medline Plus Magazine emphasizes the importance of good hygiene. Wash your hands as frequently as possible and try to refrain from touching your eyes, mouth, and nose. With these simple strategies, you can fight back against these common illnesses and make sure that you feel well enough to do the things you love most.

2. Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

During the winter months, we may be more likely to indulge in fattier foods, especially if they’re warm. Though there is nothing wrong with enjoying a treat every once in a while, too many can wreak havoc with our minds and bodies. This is especially true when it comes to dental health, as the CDC also informs us that nearly 26% of US adults aged 20-44 suffer from an untreated cavity. It’s good practice to brush your teeth at least twice a day and stay away from sugary foods and drinks where possible.

3. Make Sure You Get Enough Sleep

Data shows that REM sleep accounts for 20%-25% of healthy sleep in all adults. Even just a few restless nights can lead to a decline in your overall health. Though sometimes these circumstances can’t be helped, if you find yourself struggling to get enough sleep, consider spending more time in the sun during the day. This is because the sun releases certain chemicals that help to restore our circadian rhythms, which ensures that our sleep chemicals are released at the optimal time. By spending some quality time outdoors, you can get one step closer to having a deeply tranquil and peaceful night’s sleep.

4. Invest in Home Workout Equipment

During the winter, it can be tempting to stay indoors and on the couch. During days when the sun comes out, don’t be afraid to put on a coat and go for a walk or a hike. On days when it’s just too cold or there’s snow on the ground keeping you from your favorite hiking trails, consider opting for home workout equipment, so you can still get a good workout in in the safety of your own space.

Between flu season and the frigid temperatures, winter can take a heavy toll on us. Fortunately, by following the tips above, you can make sure that you stay as healthy and active as possible this season (even if there’s snow).
