The Art of Flower Arrangements: Heaven Scent Flowers & Gifts
In this arrangement, peach roses, pink tulips, eucalyptus, and fern fronds aren’t painted on a canvas but put into a beautiful glass vase.
Heaven Scent Flowers & Gifts in Eagle Point has been an expert in the art of flower arrangements since 1975. Cathy Wallace has been the owner for 10 years, but her experience in flower arrangements spans a lifetime. In Memphis, Tenn. Wallace spent her summers with her “grandad” arranging flowers. She also learned about flowers from her aunts who worked for the well-known Peabody Hotel in Memphis arranging flowers through the Depression.
“When I was 13, I got my first job in a flower shop in Utah. By the time I was 16, I was delivering and setting up weddings.” She also spent time apprenticing for flower design and taking care of plants, as well as worked for a high-volume flower shop in Texas for 15 years. What led her to the Rogue Valley was family. When she decided to become the owner for the longtime local florist shop, she considered it an opportunity she might not get again.
“Every day is art,” she says. In flower arrangements, a large part of the art is working under quick deadlines by creating something unique for each customer. “Just to try to decorate the shop you have to try something artistic. I think the most artistic part of my job right now [is getting] local products. You pick out according to what’s going to make the arrangement pop, or what you’re looking for in an arrangement can be something subtle.”
She explains how in a New Baby arrangement someone might want softer colors. She says it depends on “what kind of emotion [the customer] wants to relay. That’s kind of how we try to customize our designs.”
In a square glass vase, yellow tulips are sprinkled throughout a bouquet of blue irises and pink gerberas. Seeded eucalyptus pop up between flowers as a rounded texture providing the finishing touches. Pictures of beautifully fresh arrangements can be found on their website, as well as prices and arrangements for a specific occasion.
“We’re really big on making things people want,” Wallace says. “We want to have a good variety of things. We want them to walk away feeling something that’s just what they wanted.”
