How to Stay Safe on the Road as a Trucker

Trucking is a demanding yet liberating job. Being able to cruise around in a big rig across the country is a dream come true for some people. However, no matter how much you love your job, you must remain safe on the road, especially since you’re driving a large vehicle. Here’s how every trucker can stay safe on the road.

Pay Attention to the Weather

As simple as this may seem, checking the weather forecast is one of the tips every driver should know and is of the utmost importance. You need to know when you can drive without having to worry about flash floods, icy roads or even excessive temperatures. If the weather isn’t ideal, like there’s a high chance of there being a torrential downpour, it’s best to postpone the trip. During the winter, driving is not recommended in some areas because of how common black ice is. Black ice is a thin, but slippery sheet of ice that covers the road. It’s almost impossible to see at the night until you’re on top of it.

Do Not Use Your Phone

This is something all drivers should never do. Not only does it make you an irresponsible driver, but it also increases the likelihood of an accident occurring. In fact, texting and driving is one of the primary causes of car accidents. If you need to use your phone while on the road, you’ll need to get a hands-off device. These devices are Bluetooth operated, so you won’t have to worry about holding the phone while talking.

Install a Dash Cam

Not only are trucks difficult to maneuver, but they also have limited view compared to regular-sized vehicles. This is especially when the trucks are equipped with cargo. While the mirrors on the side do provide the driver with a backseat view, it’s not always enough. For this reason, you should install a dash cam. A dash cam is something that allows truck drivers and fleet managers to improve safety while driving. They provide a clear view from behind the truck. Dash cams increase visibility for the driver and also lower the risk of car accidents. They can even reduce the costs of collision. In addition, if something does occur on the road, it provides video evidence of the entire event.

Keep Your Seatbelt Fastened

Buckling your seatbelt is the first thing every driver should do. However, you’d be shocked to know that there are drivers who don’t wear one. They’re usually the same people who like to go over the speed limit on highways. Just because you’re in a large vehicle doesn’t mean that you’re invincible. Without your seatbelt, it’s possible to go flying through your windshield if an accident happens. Regardless of who is at fault in common car accident scenarios if someone is injured in a way that could have been prevented by seat belt use then nobody wins.

Drive the Speed Limit

Speaking of speed limits, it should go without saying that you shouldn’t go over it. Speeding is another leading cause of car accidents, and they’re even more dangerous due to the size of the truck. Even if you’re on an empty road, stay within the speed limit to avoid toppling over or causing an accident.
