If you find yourself getting bored with the same old work out day in and day out, try adding a bit of variety to your routine by taking your workout outside!

There is no rule that workouts need to take place inside a gym. The extra fresh air and sunshine can even increase the mental benefits of a good workout.

Put those free amenities in public parks and playgrounds to good use

You can quickly put on your favorite running shoes and walk or jog around the corner. However, if you intend to do regular outdoor workouts, there are a few things you have to consider.

How do you structure a good workout?

It all starts with planning. Follow this guide to appreciate better doing outdoor workouts.

  1. Decide what you want to do

Whatever it is you’re set to do should be tied to your fitness goal. What do you want to accomplish? Write down your workout routine. Your goals and notes will come in handy when planning the next steps.

  1. Select the location

Look for suitable locations to do your workout. If you intend to do circuit training, find a flat surface to do your squats and pushups. Use park benches or picnic tables for step-ups. Outdoor monkey bars work best for pull-ups or hanging leg lifts.

  1. Equipment and transportation

If you want to bring equipment outdoors, plan how to transport them. After all, you can’t just carry your dumbbells and medicine balls, especially if you plan to go far.

  • Choose a location with parking. Put the equipment you need inside the car and drive to your location.
  • For lightweight equipment, you can use your bike instead of a car. Put your jump rope and resistance bands, (like the ones found here: https://victoremgear.com/products/pull-up-assist-band) inside a backpack and throw it on your back!
  1. Weather forecast

Don’t let your eyes deceive you. Make it a habit to review the weather forecast before heading out. It’s not good to get suddenly caught in a downpour while drenched in sweat. Aside from the weather, take note of the following:

  • Smog
  • Air quality
  • Humidity levels
  • Heat indexes

Such factors can help you decide whether it’s a good day to be doing outdoor workouts.

  1. Dress right

Your outdoor apparel depends a great deal on the weather. It is important that your outfit keep you comfortable and protected from the harsh elements outside. Here are a few reminders:

  • During hot and dryweather, wear lightweight and light-colored fabric. You should wear outfits made from moisture-wicking fabric, a type of material that absorbs and draws sweat from your skin’s surface.
  • In coldweather, think about pieces of clothing you can easily remove or add. If the weather forecast indicates a possibility of rain or snow, make sure you wear waterproof outer layers. Make sure also to wear something to keep your ears, head, neck, face, and hands protected. You can also wear water-resistant shoes, so you don’t end up with soggy socks and wet shoes if it rains.
  • At day time, you should protect yourself from the sun’s UV rays. Put on some sports sunscreen. Wearing sunglasses and a hat will also protect your eyes and face from direct sunlight.
  1. Be safe

As much as we’d like to enjoy the outdoors and forget worrying, it’s practical to have safety measures.

  • Bring your phone. The GPS tracking feature is useful to get back on track if you end up lost. You will also need your phone in case you have to call someone for help.
  • It’s best to tell someone, a friend or loved one, where you’re going. In case anything happens, they’ll know where to find you.
  • Take your dog with you. It is one way you can bond with your pet. It will make your outdoor workout more enjoyable. A big dog can also prevent unwanted strangers from bothering you.
  1. Plan to have fun

Delight in the outdoors. Breathe in the fresh air. Behold the sight and scent of flowers and trees. Be grateful for the opportunity to enjoy your surroundings. These will bring tremendous impact to your health and well being.

Are outdoor activities a good workout?

Outdoor workout brings excellent health benefits, especially those that replicate movements that suit our bodies’ natural abilities. If you need equipment for your outdoor workouts, you can also do it. With some careful planning and creativity, you can bring a portable gym with you to expand your outdoor exercises.
