“Southern Oregon University: Its History and Significance”

Former SOU President Dr. Roy Saigo will present “Southern Oregon University: Its History and Significance” on Wednesday, February 5 at the Medford Library, 205 South Central Avenue, and Wednesday, February 12 at the Ashland Library, 410 Siskiyou Boulevard from 12 noon–1:00 p.m. at both locations.
Dr. Saigo will review the history of Southern Oregon University from 1872 to 2016, focusing on the impact and significance of its presence in the Rogue Valley. He then will share some of the environmental, fiscal, social, institutional, and cultural challenges he and his staff faced from 2014 to 2016.
Roy Hirofumi Saigo received his BA degree from the University of California Davis and earned his PhD in Botany and Plant Pathology from Oregon State University. He started as a faculty member at University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, then became Dean at University of Northern Iowa, then Provost at Southeastern Louisiana University. He then went on to become Chancellor of Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, President of St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, and completed a two-year appointment as the President of Southern Oregon University.
The monthly “Windows in Time” lunchtime lectures are offered free to the public on the first and second Wednesday throughout the year from 12 noon–1:00 p.m. The Southern Oregon Historical Society and Jackson County Library Services co-sponsor the lecture series.
