World’s First Fungi Film Festival to Stream This October
On October 16, 2020, the world’s first international short film festival dedicated to fungi – The Fungi Film Festival (FFF) – will be livestreamed to audiences around the world from a mushroom farm located in Portland, Oregon. Similar to other short film festivals originating from the Pacific Northwest (e.g. HUMP! and Filmed By Bike), the FFF is community-driven, with films to come from professional and amateur filmmakers of all skill levels. The festival is accepting 3–10 minute long film submissions until August 31, with the only requirement being that films feature fungi in some way – directly, abstractly, or otherwise.
The FFF was first envisioned by Peter McCoy, a Portland-based mushroom farmer and mycology educator, as well as the author of the book Radical Mycology, which explores the many intersections between human cultures and fungi. “As a life-long cinephile and mycologist, combining these topics in a fungi-focused film fest not only seemed like a natural fit to me, but also long overdue for the global community of people interested in mushrooms and other fungi,” said McCoy. “Today, interest in fungi is rapidly spreading around the world. But with limited options for gathering in-person to celebrate all that mushrooms offer, creating the Fungi Film Fest and hosting it online was the most exciting endeavor I could imagine for sharing the messages of these incredible species with others.”
The Fungi Film Festival kicks off October 16 at 7pm PST and will run for several hours. During the opening night, the FFF’s selection committee and jury (composed of several mushroom growers, artists, and mycologists) will be hosting the event live from McCoy’s Portland-based mushroom farm, where they will grant five festival awards to select films. One of these will be the Audience Choice Award, with the vote being cast online during the opening night.
The Festival will also be livestreamed (and hosted live by the FFF committee) on October 17 at 8pm PST, October 23 at 6pm PST, October 24 at 10am PST, October 28 at 10am PST, and on October 30 at 6pm PST. Tickets are now available at http://fungifilmfest.com/tickets.
