February 21 - February 23
Celebrate Chinese New Year and Beethoven with the Rogue Valley Symphony
The Rogue Valley Symphony will be celebrating the Chinese New Year with one of the most famous Chinese orchestral compositions: The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto by Chinese composers He Zhanhao and Chen Gang. 2018 winner of the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition Nancy Zhou will perform this spectacular work. Beethoven’s first and second symphonies will round out the program. Concerts will be on Friday, February 21 at 7:30 pm in the SOU Music Recital Hall, 450 S Mountain Ave, Ashland; Saturday, February 22 at 7:30pm and Sunday, February 23 at 3:00pm in the Craterian Theater at the Collier Center for the Performing Arts, 23 S. Central Ave, Medford. Note* There is NO Grants Pass performance of this concert. Conductor Martin Majkut will give a pre-concert talk one hour before each performance.
Chinese American violinist Nancy Zhou has a deep personal connection to winning the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition. Her father studied at the Shanghai Conservatory as a teenager. He was Nancy’s violin teacher from age 4 up until she attended college at the New England Conservatory. The Rogue Valley Symphony was the first organization to book Nancy after her victory in the competition. The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto is perhaps the most well-known piece of classical music in China. Majkut described it as “Romantic Chinese music from the 1950s. It sounds like movie music.” The RVS is excited to celebrate Chinese New Year in the Rogue Valley with the performances of this concert.
The RVS will also be performing both Beethoven’s first and second symphonies. Majkut said of Beethoven, “There are always shocking moments in Beethoven’s music. His genius is clear from the get go with this first symphony.” These two symphonies fill out RVS performances of all 9 Beethoven symphonies conducted by Majkut.
