AIFF World Film: A Thriller From Iran, October 2 and 15
There may be no better year than this one to virtually travel: Ashland Independent Film Festival is hosting their (31st) Varsity World Film Weeks, a collection of films snagged from around the globe – a thriller from Iran, a animation festival from the Netherlands, a noir film from England.
Octo. 2, 15: Yalda, A Night for Forgiveness (Iran)
A tense thriller, this Iranian film presents the story about Maryam, a young woman who has murdered her older husband and now is on national TV begging for forgiveness from the man’s daughter. The movie’s gravity is derived from the tension between the two women—the murderer and the victim’s daughter. Cleverly, though, the filmmakers add additional friction, like the constrictive gender roles in Iran that both women push against. It is a beautiful film, rainy and dark in atmosphere, and paced just right for a modern-day crime thriller. PB
