Portrait of a Woman by Jenay M. Elder

“I truly believe art is about expressing yourself with a growth mindset,” says Jenay Elder.

Flowers, at least some varieties, can bloom in the worst of circumstances. Elder is blossoming too in these uncertain times—growing her business online. Usually, she conducts classes and demos at Art & Soul Gallery below the Elk’s Lodge in Ashland, but with the doors closed, she has adapted.

Now, every Friday at 5 pm, she streams a live painting class for free through YouTube or Facebook or both.

Don’t have supplies at home? No problem. In partnership with Central Art Supply, you can have them delivered to your door or go pick them up curbside. About two weeks ago, this Medford business began offering a painting supply kit for Elder’s students. If you order over $35, there is no delivery charge in the greater Medford, Ashland and Central Point areas. Up in the hills—you may have to do a pick-up and things can change, so call them and speak to Dan Ebert, owner.

Those yearning to be creative at home can get started painting without prior experience or practice. Elder’s advice for beginners is this: “If someone hasn’t painted before, they should try it! At the very least it will lighten your heart. My teaching style is fun and informative.”

Her “Paint Night” classes are especially geared toward novices. Visit her Facebook page listed below to find out more about these. She is well-versed in conducting live demos and teaching on the fly (she did this out of her gallery before it temporarily closed). She also taught continuing education classes for Rogue Community College until recently.

With three kids at home, Elder has had to reinvent herself and she embraces the opportunity to learn a whole new way to conduct her teaching. “In South Korea and Japan, streaming is a big deal. We just need to catch up in the United States,” she explains. When someone attends Elder’s online class, they will learn to create representational portraits or landscapes with oil paints.

“My landscapes are impressionistic, but most things I paint at this point are representational in some form,” she says. “It’s just what I respond to. My area of expertise is in capturing a scene and drawing quickly, working fast and grabbing inspiration when it strikes.”

Her favorite subject matter is light, nature, the moon, and people. Her plan for the future is to continue to, “focus on bringing content and products online.”
