While art education in many school curriculums are less funded, that doesn’t mean children can’t learn or practice art outside of school. For years Central Art Supply in downtown Medford has been offering classes to anyone interested, regardless of age.

“Central Art offers a space in which local art instructors are able to offer their own classes and workshops to the public, and has done so for as long as it has been here in the Rogue Valley,” says Floor Manager and Social Media Coordinator for Central Art Supply Adam Bunch. “I am inspired by the incredible diversity and talent that comes through our doors every day, as students collect their supplies to create their next masterpiece. Their enthusiasm and creative spirit is a constant reminder of why the owners, Dan and Ann Ebert, have kept this business thriving.”

From weekly classes to one day events, students can learn painting with oils, pastels, watercolor, drawing, and more. Stefan Baumann teaches a three-hour art class every Thursday from nine in the morning to one in the afternoon. Students choose what they want to learn, such as drawing, painting, or color composition. All day on Wednesdays Richard McKinley teaches more experienced painters structure, composition, and the use of colors. Recent one-day classes were an adult coloring class hosted by Chickadee Creative Coloring and a pastel painting class of waves taught by artist Janis Ellison. Each class varies in difficulty, but every one is just as educational and entertaining as the last.

“As a business that supports local artists and the art community at large,” says Bunch, “we at Central Art hope that students feel encouraged by the wealth of information being shared by a variety of talented artists from all over Southern Oregon, who have been offering art instruction independently for many years. It really is all about the art community!”
