War of the Worlds – The Panic Broadcast, adapted from the original transcripts of the Orson Welles 1938 radio broadcast lives again at CTP. Are you ready for the Martian invasion? Join CTP Radio Days actors as they re-create history.
Directed by Daniel Sessions Stephens, Radio Days is a full-length entertainment that brings storytelling back to the future! In the early days of radio, families gathered to hear the latest adventure or mystery stories coming over the airwaves. In October,1938, Mercury Theatre on the Air’s presentation of H.G. Wells’ novel created havoc with listeners across the nation. The program aired when radio was still relatively new and no one fully understood the impact that this new medium could have, especially in the climate of fear that was beginning to engulf the world. WWI was still fresh in people’s minds; the Great Depression had only recently ended, and the rise of Fascism with Nazi’s in Germany threatened Europe as war clouds gathered. Everything contributed to the fear that invasion was real – if not Martians, then by a foreign power. All across America peopled listened — and panicked.
Radio Days at CTP’s live performance of The War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast by Joe Landry will use the tools of radio with a visual assist to unleash your imagination. Radio Days reminds us that listening is an important aspect of storytelling – aided by a live sound effects table to enhance the experience.
Jeff Ripley is Orson Welles and is joined by the talent of Pam Ward and Sean Warren to re-create this historically chilling evening of theatre. Upcoming Radio Days productions are being planned for the 2019 holiday season.
