Sweeney Todd at Oregon Cabaret Theatre
August 29 - November 10$12 – $43
Running from August 29th to November 10th, Sweeney Todd is the first full Stephen Sondheim musical to play at the Oregon Cabaret Theatre and stars Cabaret favorites Galloway Stevens as Sweeney and Valerie Rachelle as Mrs. Lovett. The London-inspired dinner menu for Sweeney Todd includes freshly baked meat pies.
Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning masterpiece tells the story of Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, who returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance on the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, whose fortunes rise when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up.
With both music and lyrics by Sondheim, Sweeney Todd contains more than twenty musical numbers, including “Johanna”, “A Little Priest”, “The Worst Pies in London”, and “City on Fire”.
Oregon Cabaret Theatre associate artistic director Galloway Stevens (Sweeney Todd) is well known to Southern Oregon audiences, having previously appeared in Cabaret, 9 to 5, Chicago, Bat Boy, Rocky Horror, Noises Off, Million Dollar Quartet, and most recently Sherlock Holmes and the Sign of the Four. They are joined by Cabaret veterans Jonathan Hoover (Altar Boyz, Bat Boy), Nathan Monks (She Loves Me, Bat Boy), Kristen Calvin (Beehive, She Loves Me), Michael Spencer (Once). Todd Neilsen, Molly Dobbs, and James Conrad Smith all make their Oregon Cabaret Theatre debuts in Sweeney Todd.
Sweeney Todd contains graphic scenes of violence and murder. Were it a movie, it would be rated R.
